Introduction- The Natural Disasters of France
The Natural Disasters of France
France is located near the Western end of the Eurasian landmass. The population of France is estimated around 62, 218, 000 people, currently in 2023. An average day in France in winter is around 32 degrees Fahrenheit to 46 degrees Fahrenheit and is mostly rainy throughout Winter. In the summer, the temperature is 61 degrees Fahrenheit to 75 degrees Fahrenheit making.
A natural disaster that affected France, financially and economically was in December of 1999, Cyclone Lothar hit France while moving more than 120 miles per hour. Economically, Lothar caused over EUR 15 billion worth of damages. Over 140 people lost their lives due to this storm. A day right after that storm came 'Storm Martin'. Both storms began off the French Atlantic Ocean and hit land in western France. On track of that, cleaning up was focused mainly on forests in France, Germany, and Switzerland. Around 80% of the buildings in surrounding building were damaged. Including 140 million cubic meters of forests were destroyed. More than three million households were without electricity for about three days. It was the most affective storm in Europe since 1876 and these storms caused more forest damage ever recorded in Central Europe.
General Definitions
Hazard- 'A geologic hazard is an adverse geologic condition capable of causing damage or loss of property or life. These geologic processes only become hazards when humans get in their way; if there were no people affected, we would find these natural phenomena interesting, but not concerning.'
Disaster- 'A geological disaster occurs when natural geological processes impact on our activities, either through loss of life or injury, or through economic loss.'
Catastrophe- ' A sudden and widespread disaster'
The difference between hazards, disasters, and catastrophes is that hazard is like when danger comes towards people although no one dies. A disaster happens when a natural geological process has affected our environment or people. A catastrophe is when a huge event happens and it ruins many lives and properties/environment. It is like three levels of danger. Such as a hazard barely affects anyone and a catastrophe and ruin everything.
